Many of us do yoga for a sense of retreat from the craziness of our daily schedules. Some go as far as trying to attain zen, while others are content with securing a free, uninterrupted hour for themselves. And while doing yoga in the confines of a studio is often enough to help you meet your objectives, nothing beats the feeling of doing yoga in nature – particularly a hiking trail and there are many beautiful trails in Big Bear to take you outside and into nature.

A Big Bear local and certified yoga instructor, Stefanie Ruland shares her experience with outdoor Yoga in Big Bear Lake. She hikes her way to the top of castle rock trail early in the morning with her yoga mat, and favorite hiking companion her furry friend Lulu. Castle rock trail is a fairly short 2.4 miles round trip journey with stunning views. The first mile or so is a little steep but levels off when you reach granite rock at the peak. She is doing yoga where the ground isn’t completely flat, and holding poses where one can enjoy the silence and then, later, try to fight distraction from barking dogs and screaming children. More interestingly, though, Stefanie provides a glimpse into what it’s like to do yoga in a place where you are disconnected enough from an increasingly connected virtual society, while still being close enough to learn to overcome the challenges of deliberately plugging out.

Here are some reasons for you to try outdoor Yoga:

Explore New Places
As creatures of habit and comfort, we gravitate toward our favorite spots in the park and miss out on other great areas the park has to offer. Outdoor Yoga encourages you to seek out less populated, if not oft-deserted, areas to execute your poses. Be careful not to get lost, though. And if possible, go on outdoor Yoga trips with a group of people. This is safer and guaranteed more fun. Which leads us to our next point…

Meet New People
Outdoor Yoga really is a great way to meet and mingle with new people. There isn’t a better way to connect with other people than through a shared love for yoga, and in a rather unconventional setting, at that. If you don’t have that option though, why not take the lead and gather around a group of your yogi friends for a new experience up in the mountains?

Learn to Focus
When hiking in the mountains, there will be quiet areas and noisy ones–those with barking dogs, chattering moms, and squealing, screaming, and wailing kids. Yet therein lies the beauty of such a challenge: in an environment that isn’t conducive to focus, you are forced to learn other ways to do so.

Break Free
Outdoor Yoga teaches you what it truly means to break free and disconnect from the familiarity of a routine. More importantly, it teaches you what it truly means to be balanced in a world with distractions that never permanently go away.

Big Bear is home to endless opportunities. The first thing that comes to the minds of many visitors is the unparalleled opportunity for recreation that you have while here. This is true, but perhaps the greatest opportunity comes with the incredible food that you can find throughout this beautiful town. The community is not very big, but they sure make a lot of amazing food! This is on full display through some of the community’s wonderful food festivals coming up.

Big Bear Grill and Chill

This is one of the most interesting events in Big Bear as it brings a bit of friendly competition together with a day spent relaxing. The Kansas City Barbecue Society is throwing this event for the first time on May 25th and May 26th. Competition entries are open to everyone, so if you think the world needs to taste one of you family’s recipes, get your team together and reserve yourself a spot in the competition. If you are not so much a cook as much as an eater, then you can forgo the competition and just explore the festival. Obviously, there will be plenty of amazing foods, but there will also be music, drinks, and activities to compliment it. The festivities are happening at 630 Bartlett Road.

4th of July Barbecue

When this amazing holiday comes together with great food, there is really something to celebrate. You will find a very food-centric celebration of the 4th of July in Big Bear at the Marina Resort. Reserved seats and amazing meals are served as you enjoy live entertainment along with games and activities for the kids. Once you have eaten your fill and had some fun, the fireworks cap off the evening starting at 8:45 pm.

The Chili Cook Off

This festival brings comfort food at its finest, with the main event revolving around a variety of the best chili recipes in the area. There will be over 40 cooks vying for the title of best chili in Big Bear, and you can taste all of the chili you want! But there is also plenty of other awesome foods, drinks, live entertainment, and a play area for the kids. Bring an appetite and have an amazing time at this year’s chili cook off. The festivities will take place at the Bartlett Activities Area in mid-July, although the 2018 dates have yet to be set, so check back at www.bigbear.com.

These are some of the more interesting culinary events coming up, but there are so many more that you are bound to love. Check the city’s schedule of events to find just one more reason to visit Big Bear!

Big Bear is a small city with a massive lake in California. It is one of the most popular alpine lakes in the country, and for good reason. Many people know of the great beauty here, but there is so much more to this incredible place. Here are a few fun facts that make it a great place to visit.

Big Bear is a Manmade Lake

The first dam was created in 1885. It was expanded upon in 1910, thus tripling the amount of water in the lake. The area turned into an absolute haven of beauty and fun. Now, it is one of the best places in the country for recreation. Boating, fishing, and swimming are just a few of the things that people love about coming here.

It was Among the First Places That Skiing was Introduced as a Sport

As the area falls within the Sierra Nevada mountain range, Big Bear offers some of the most perfect mountains for great skiing and snowboarding conditions. As such, skiing was brought to the area in 1925, and the industry took off! Today, you can find some of the best skiing opportunities in the country on the slopes of these mountains overlooking the beautiful lake.

The Population Can Grow by 2,000% for Events and Holidays

There are endless amazing, naturally-occurring things to enjoy about the area. But the community is a big part of what makes it a great place as well. This is best demonstrated in the fun events that are taking place here throughout the entire year. Fourth of July is a time when the population explodes to enjoy festivals and amazing fireworks. But there are plenty of other festivals celebrating everything from food and beer to art and live music.

The Weather Offers the Best of Both Worlds

The weather here is great because it offers amazing times for exploring the outdoors and also chilly nights for curling up next to a fire with friends and family. You will find the yearly average high is 82 degrees and the average low is 21 degrees. This allows for everything from skiing and snowboarding to swimming and hiking.

Unlike Surrounding Areas, Big Bear Offers All of the Seasons

California is not always the best place for those that particularly enjoy autumn and spring. Big Bear is a major exception to this, as you will find all of the seasons here. Fall is perhaps the most beautiful time in the valley; the bright greens are still exploding alongside the gentle colors of changing leaves. A more picturesque scene could not be imagined.

The history and beauty of this place, make it as unique as any other. Both of these aspects of the culture here make it an incredible place to visit. Discover more by choosing Big Bear as your next vacation destination!
