If the beauty of a lakefront village, fresh mountain air, and a slower pace than a big city might be just what you’re looking for when you book your next getaway, look no further than Big Bear. There are fun and exciting Big Bear family activities for everyone to enjoy, including your teens who claim, “I’m bored,” only moments into a new adventure. Keep them engaged and excited for what’s next when you create a vacation that includes some family activities in Big Bear that seem like they’re created just for them but are fun for the entire family.

Hiking

Big Bear has beautiful scenery, including stunning mountains, pine forests, and wide-open spaces that will make you want to spend your days outside. A great way to get into the thick of it all is hiking. There are trails for every age and skill level, so everyone can be comfortably challenged. Limit your time in the sun and take plenty of water, trail snacks, and sun protection. There are many parks and trails to hike to see nature’s beauty in Big Bear. Don’t forget to take your camera, as you’ll spot local wildlife in their natural habitat while you stretch your legs and get a breath of fresh mountain air.

Horseback Ride

Gather everyone and saddle up for a horseback ride. The activity if often a unique vacation experience for many and is bound to keep your teen engaged as they learn to navigate and control the horse for a serene ride. See Big Bear and the surrounding area in a new way when you book a ride with Baldwin Lake Stables. Take a ride through Big Bear Valley with a one-, two-, or three-hour trip. Tours include Big Bear Valley, the Pacific Crest Trail, and various parts of the Mojave Desert. Book a sunset ride for a view of the sun sinking below the mountains. For the longer rides, make sure you pack a picnic.

Water Activities

While the water may be a bit cool still, that doesn’t stop water enthusiasts from spending a day on the lake. If the waters of Big Bear Lake seem to be calling you and your teen’s names, there are plenty of activities to keep everyone busy on the “all sports” lake. Rent a boat and cruise the lake, or up the adrenaline with wakeboarding or water skiing. Visit one of the six marinas at the lake and rent gear for kayaking, canoeing, paddleboarding, and more. Those who don’t want to get wet can opt to stay on shore and play in the sand, sunbathe, or plant the beach umbrella and just chill out for a while.

Alpine Slide at Magic Mountain

Adults can be a kid again, and kids and teens can enjoy the adrenaline rush of a lifetime. The Alpine Slide at Big Bear Magic Mountain is open year-round and never fails to entertain. Hours vary by season. The chair lift to the top offers a beautiful view of the area. At the top, prepare for an unforgettable ride down the area’s only authentic bobsled experience. Teens will love piloting their own sleds, which are individually controlled so you can go as slow or as fast as you want down your choice of two separate quarter-mile long cement tracks. Careen around high-banking turns and into straightaways that will have you cruising as fast as you want and have your adrenaline pumping by the time you reach the bottom. Riders must be at least 36” tall to ride, and children under 48” tall must ride with an adult age 18 or older.

Jeep Tours

While you’ll likely spend some time in and around the lake, going for scenic drives, and enjoying other outdoor activities, add a thrill when you take your teens to explore where the rental car can’t take you. Big Bear and the surrounding area are full of nooks and crannies, like the Holcomb Valley Gold Fever Trail, “The Squeeze” – featuring skinny pathways and rough terrain, and many more routes you can combine for a custom route all your own. Take a guided tour or rent a vehicle for your own off-road fun.
