Aspen Glen Picnic Area

The San Bernardino National Forest in the Big Bear Lake area offers many opportunities for adventures of a more natural type. Hiking, camping, and picnicking are just a few of the activities that can be fun for the entire family. The Aspen Glen Picnic Area is one place that has always been a favorite of our families, and when you visit, you will see why. Tranquil and scenic, a picnic here may just become the highlight of your trip!

Located Just West of Big Bear Village on Mill Creek Road

Requiring an Adventure Pass, which costs $5 for the day or $30 for an annual pass, the Aspen Glen Picnic Area is definitely worth the cost of admission. Public parking for up to 16 cars, picnic tables, and public restrooms offer conveniences not often found in the wild. It is open year-round, but don’t ask us which season is our favorite, as we find ourselves visiting during every season, no matter what the weather.

Winter, when the snow is covering the ground and the trees are bare, provides a stark beauty and a great hike from the Pineknot Trailhead; just remember to dress warmly, it gets cold in Big Bear in the winter! Aspen Glen is also a popular sledding spot. If you didn’t bring one of your own, Big Bear Sporting Goods, Walmart, and Big 5 Sporting Goods all sell a range of sleds at prices that start at $9.99 and go up from there.

Spring offers the promise of warmer days and the beauty of silvery green leaves budding on the trees. Your picnic may need to be shortened due to an unexpected spring shower, but its hard to get upset when you are in this tranquil spot.

Summer days stay cool in the shade of fully green trees, and your family picnic promises to last longer than you originally planned; this spot is for day use only, so when you notice the sun beginning to set, it’s time to go!

In the fall, prepare to have your breath taken away; the trees are dressed in their fall finest, the reds, golds, oranges, and purples falling to the ground in a rain of color. Feel them crunch beneath your feet, as you hike the trails. On chilly days, a fire ring allows you to build a fire for warmth, but please be careful and follow the fire safety rules
