Rustic Charm

The worst thing about staying in a hotel, in our humble opinion, is the impersonal sterility of the rooms. Hallway after hallway filled with doors that lead to rooms that look exactly like the other rooms; the beds may be bigger, and some views may be nicer than others, but the fixtures, linens, even the furnishings and electronics provided are EXACTLY THE SAME.

When you rent an Owl Pine Lodge cabin, however, the difference is apparent immediately. The exteriors resemble a smaller sized Swiss chalet constructed of wood and brick and a dramatic pitched roof that provides a shaded patio for quiet moments with coffee and company. The interiors offer a rustic charm that is filled with character, each room more unique than the last.

You can picture your family gathering around the kitchen table, sharing stories and making memories as you dine on homemade meals or pizza straight from the box. Family rooms are designed for playing games in front of the fire, reading books in chairs so comfy you fall asleep with your book on your chest and a smile on your face, or simply for staring outside at the beauty that is Big Bear.

Iron bedframes that bring back memories of simpler times, ruffled curtains on windows that actually open to let in the fresh air of the night, and paneled walls in the bedrooms create deep sleep zones in which only happy dreams are allowed. The character continues in bathrooms with pedestal sinks, gingham checked shower curtains, and soft rugs that feel warm beneath cold feet. Our Owl Pine Lodge cabins are comfortable and homey, not expensive and sterile, and every minute spent in them will bring you back to simpler times.

Can you remember the last time you and your family actually had a complete conversation that wasn’t interrupted by text messages, phone calls, or the ding of an instant message popping up on your social media account? Wi-Fi is available at the Owl Pine Lodge, but this vacation will be about turning off the phones, powering down the laptops, and listening to each other; how crazy is that?

Things to See and Do Close to Owl Pine Lodge

Owl Pine Lodge is situated in an ideal spot that gives guests the best of both summer and wintertime entertainment in Big Bear.

During the colder skiing season, Snow Summit and Bear Mountain—the area’s two most popular ski resorts—are just five minutes away by car. At these sister resorts, you can purchase one ticket for both mountains, then spend the day skiing and snowboarding the day away. Big Bear Snow Play, a lift-serviced snow tubing area that features lit nighttime tubing and complimentary hot chocolate, and the Alpine Slide at Magic Mountain, an alpine toboggan coaster that uses mountain terrain to create a ride, are also nestled five minutes away.

In the summer, the Alpine Slide at Magic Mountain turns into a water park with water slides, and Big Bear Snow Play turns into Big Bear Speedway, with go-karting and mini-golfing onsite. Visitors and locals alike are drawn to the sparkling waters of Big Bear Lake, where people can go fishing, boating, swimming, jet skiing, kayaking, canoeing, and more.

Big Bear Lake is well-known for its stock of trout and bass, as well as the extraordinary sightseeing cruises and private charters provided by unique vessels, like the old-fashioned paddlewheel boats known as the Big Bear Queen and the Miss Liberty, or the authentic Spanish Galleon replica, Time Bandit (as seen in the movie Time Bandits). Just stop by any of the local marinas to begin your lake adventure; they offer permits for fishing and boating, equipment rentals, and charter services like parasailing at Pine Knot Marina.

Nearby is also The Village, the center of the town’s best dining and shopping. Dine at eateries like Teddy Bear Restaurant, Grizzly Manor Café, Sweet Basil Bistro, or Peppercorn Grille. Grab drinks at Bear Mountain Brewery or 572 Social Kitchen and Lounge. Browse through boutiques such as Brown Bear Gift Shop, Del Lago’s Boutique, and Big Bear Sporting Goods for a one-of-a-kind souvenir to commemorate your stay in Big Bear. For family-friendly activities, the Bowling Barn offers bowling even during the night with glow bowling, and Big Bear Funplex’s laser tag arena, arcade games, and indoor ice skating rink are renowned.
