HomeBig Bear for the HolidaysIndependence Day in Big Bear Lake

Big Bear Lake, California is a family-friendly and fun destination to visit no matter what time of year you feel the call to hit the road or skies in the name of vacation. While the winter months here provide pristine slopes for skiers, the summer months come to life with those who love the lake. When you’re planning a Big Bear 4th of July trip, you’ll want to take advantage of the area’s many exciting activities held in honor of Independence Day. Whether you love fireworks or prefer running your way through the holiday, you’ll find something that keeps you engaged from the moment you arrive.

Big Bear Lake 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular

It would be almost unpatriotic to consider a 4th of July vacation without fireworks, and luckily Big Bear is one of the best destinations in southern California to enjoy a truly spectacular show! Personal fireworks of any kind are illegal in Big Bear, so leave your sparklers at home and head out to one of the many fireworks shows in the area. Big Bear takes pride in offering the biggest fireworks show in southern California, and you are sure to be impressed!

When the sun goes down over Big Bear Lake on the 4th of July, visitors and locals are invited to enjoy the annual Fireworks Spectacular. Fireworks are set off from Pine Knot Marina, providing visitors across the lake with an unsurpassed view of the many colors and creative designs in the sky. The show tends to start around 8:45 pm when it’s dark enough to make the most of this spectacular and patriotic event.

Finding a spot with the best views of the fireworks show can make or break your 4th of July weekend. Many local lakeside restaurants offer fireworks show dining packages that secure a spot on the patio for VIP views and delicious drinks and bites. Another popular viewing spot is the north shore of the lake. Get there early to secure a good spot, and be sure to bring a blanket and sweater, as the weather gets chilly after the sun goes down, even in summer! However, the best viewing area has to be a lakeside rental in Big Bear. Enjoy the view from the privacy of your personal cabin and avoid the fireworks traffic.

Big Bear 15K

Hosted by the Bear Valley Search and Rescue, visitors to Big Bear Lake with a passion for lacing up their shoes and hitting the road in the name of competition will want to sign up for their spot in the Big Bear 4th of July 15K. Kicking off at Meadow Park, participants are welcome to enjoy the entire 15K route or modify their experience by signing up for a 5K or 10K loop. Runners of all ages are invited to come and make the most of this exciting event with proceeds benefiting the Bear Valley Search and Rescue. Participating in the 5K costs $30 while the 10K is $40 and the 15K is $50. Strollers are welcome during races making this an all-inclusive and family-friendly 4th of July event.

Typically, this event is held in person. However, due to COVID risks and restrictions, the event has transitioned to a virtual race for the upcoming race in 2021. Luckily, you can still get in on the fun by signing up, heading out, and logging your time. You’ll still get to see your results compared to the other racers and you will also receive your custom shirt and medal for running the race. Summer weather in Big Bear couldn’t be better suited for an outdoor walk or run, and the best part is all the proceeds go to a good cause!

Independence Day Fair

When you’re looking for a 4th of July family-fun stop that includes games, activities, a beer garden and live music, head on over to the Big Bear Convention Center to be a part of the Independence Day Fair. Running from 10:00 am until 5:00 pm guests will enjoy craft booths, bouncy houses, face painting and plenty of on-site food vendors to curb any craving throughout the day.

Glow Golf at Bear Mountain

By the time 4th of July rolls around, the ski resorts are in the full swing of summer activities. There is tons of summer fun to be had at the resorts, but one of the more unique activities offered over 4th of July weekend is glow golf. On July 2nd and 3rd from 7pm to 10pm, you can enjoy 9 holes of golf with a lighted course and balls. Your $59 fee includes dinner with a beer or fountain soda, one glow in the dark golf ball, and a golf cart. This event is perfect for the golf-loving family!
