If the beauty of a lakefront village, fresh mountain air, and a slower place than a big city might be just what you’re looking for when you book your next getaway, look no further than Big Bear. There are so many summer activities in Big Bear to enjoy.

Hiking

Big Bear has beautiful scenery, including stunning mountains, pine forests, and wide-open spaces that will make you want to spend your days outside. A great way to get into the thick of it all is hiking. As temperatures heat up, you’ll want to limit your time in the sun and take protection. There are many parks and trails to hike to see nature’s beauty in Big Bear. Don’t forget to take your camera, as you’ll spot local wildlife in their natural habitat while you stretch your legs and get a breath of fresh mountain air.

Horseback Ride

Gather your group and saddle up for a horseback ride. See Big Bear and the surrounding area in a new way when you book a ride with Baldwin Lake Stables. Take a ride through Big Bear Valley with a one-, two-, or three-hour trip. Tours include Big Bear Valley, the Pacific Crest Trail, and various parts of the Mojave Desert. Book a sunset ride for a view of the sun sinking below the mountains. For the longer rides, make sure you pack a picnic.

Water Activities

While the water may be a bit cool still, that doesn’t stop water enthusiasts from spending a day on the lake. If the waters of Big Bear Lake seem to be calling your name, there are plenty of activities to keep you busy on the “all sports” lake. Rent a boat and cruise the lake or go wakeboarding or water skiing. Visit one of the six marinas at the lake and rent gear for kayaking, canoeing, paddleboarding, and more. Those who don’t want to get wet can opt to stay on shore and play in the sand, sunbathe, or plant the beach umbrella and just chill out for a while.

Alpine Slide at Magic Mountain

Adults can be a kid again, and kids can enjoy the adrenaline rush of a lifetime with one of our favorite summer activities in Big Bear. The Alpine Slide at Big Bear Magic Mountain is open year-round and never fails to entertain. Expanded summer hours means more time to enjoy the thrill. The chair lift to the top offers a beautiful view of the area. At the top, prepare for an unforgettable ride down the area’s only authentic bobsled experience. Sleds are individually controlled so you can go as slow or as fast as you want down your choice of two separate quarter-mile long cement tracks. Careen around high banking turns that turn into straightaways that will have you cruising as fast as you want and have your adrenaline pumping by the time you reach the bottom. Riders must be at least 36” tall to ride, and children under 48” tall must ride with an adult age 18 or older. Current COVID safety measures include facial coverings for all employees and guests, social distancing between groups, and frequent washing and sanitizing measures that meet CDC guidelines.

Alpine Pedal Path

The area marinas rent all your desired water sports gear, but there are companies that also offer bike rentals. Rent some of your own and plot a course for the Alpine Pedal Path on the north shore of Big Bear Lake. The 2.5-mile path is mostly flat and paved with asphalt. Some sections run close to the water’s edge and others wind you through the trees. Begin the trek at the Stanfield Cutoff and follow the trail all the way to its end near the Solar Observatory. Keep on the lookout, you may share the path with other guests and locals out for a jog, walk, or gliding around on rollerblades.

Magic Mountain

Besides the thrill of the alpine slide, you can make a day out of the whole Magic Mountain park. Cool off with a ride down the alpine water slide. Twist and turn down one of two slides before splashing down into the 3.5-foot-deep splash pool. Riders must be 36” and wear a provided life jacket. Spend the day on the slide or occupy yourself with go-karts, mini-golf, or the new “Soaring Eagle” ride that takes riders steadily backwards 100 feet vertical and 500 feet long to a launch tower that then catapults you at speeds of up to 28 miles per hour back to the base.
