For the past 22-years, skiers from near and far have been flocking to Snow Summit in Big Bear, California for a chance to participate in the annual Victor Alvarez Race. Held in honor of race instructor Victor Alvarez who tragically passed away due to injuries sustained during a ski accident in 1994, this race both commemorates Alvarez’s life while contributing financially to The Big Bear Ski Education Foundation. In 2019, the downhill tradition continues with the 23rd annual race being held on March 2nd at Snow Summit.
Athletes interested in participating in the Victor Alvarez Race can register at the Snow Summit Race Team office. Participants 15-years of age and under will pay an entrance fee of $50 while those 16 and up can enter for a fee of $80. Prospective participants that currently possess a season pass for winter 2018/2019 will enjoy $10 off the cost of registration. Early registration is accepted up until February 23 while late registration fees apply for those entering the race between the 23rd and March 2nd. Same day registration is available at Tyndall Haus between 8:30 am and 9:30 am. Participants can enjoy a variety of prizes, t-shirts and lift tickets that come as part of the entrance package.
The event officially opens at 8:00 am and participants face off on a Modified Dual Giant Slalom. Qualifying races begin promptly at 10:00 am and the intensity kicks up a notch with elimination rounds starting at 1:00 pm. Those who are not racing or onsite to support a racer will want to make time to participate in the silent auction in SoCal marketplace. Opportunities to bid on everything from ski gear, resort lodging, gift baskets, and snowboarding apparel will be well worth the investment with proceeds going towards The Big Bear Ski Education Foundation as well.
