About Big Bear’s Famous Ski Resort

First established in 1948, Snow Summit and Bear Mountain have been sister ski resorts since 2002. Here, visitors wanting the mountain experience of Big Bear can switch from Snow Summit to Bear Mountain and back again with ease. These resorts both accept lift passes and rental equipment from each other, providing visitors with a myriad of choices when it comes to ski runs, terrain parks, tubing areas, and more. With its bevy of trails suited to skiers and snowboarders of all skill levels and expertise, Snow Summit is one of Big Bear’s foremost spots to play in the snow!

Big Bear has been Southern California’s number one ski resort since the beginning, but at one point in time, there wasn’t quite enough snow to go around. During January of 1953, Snow Summit’s first chair lift was built. Then, the snowmaker was invented to create the amount of snow needed for Snow Summit to continue to prosper and provide ample skiing terrain, despite Southern California’s sunshine-filled days and temperate climate.

In the 1990s, Snow Summit began to stand out for its ideal terrain for snowboarding, a sport that was gaining rapid popularity. Today, Snow Summit remains one of California’s best snowboarding spots and attractions countless snowboarders to the mountain each year.

Because of the innovation of the snowmaker and terrain parks, Snow Summit went on to become the challenging and expansive course that it is today. Snow Summit is home to a plethora of fun zones for snowboarders, fourteen lifts, and thirty-one trails spanning over the course of two hundred and forty acres. Snow Summit also averages around one hundred inches of snowfall during each winter season, thanks to the snowmakers.

What to Do on Snow Summit

Snow Summit in California offers a multitude of activities all year long. From night skiing under lit conditions to snowboarding, tubing, and skiing, the winter season alone has much to offer for visitors. However, Snow Summit’s appeal doesn’t stop there; in the summer, you can take a scenic chair lift ride, play on ziplines and climbing walls at Basecamp, and ride down a lift-serviced mountain bike park. There’s always something to do at Snow Summit!
